How to Qualify an ESD Garment Laundry Supplier
A Practical QA & Operations Checklist for Manufacturers
Selecting a laundry provider for ESD garments should not begin with one question:
“What is your price per garment?”
Price matters, but an ESD garment program can also involve manufacturer care instructions, static-control requirements, weekly garment availability, sorting, packing, exception handling, QA procedures and business continuity.
A supplier that can wash a garment once is not necessarily a supplier that can operate a reliable garment program every week.
For Operations, Procurement, QA and ESD teams, the better question is:
Can this supplier repeatedly process and return our garments according to the requirements of our factory?
This checklist is designed to help manufacturers evaluate that question before approving a laundry provider, launching a pilot or moving a recurring garment program from one supplier to another.
What This Checklist Is Designed to Evaluate
The objective is not to determine whether a laundry provider is “good” or “bad” in general.
The objective is to determine whether the supplier is suitable for your specific garment program.
The evaluation should consider four areas:
1. Garment Compatibility
Can the supplier process the actual garments according to manufacturer and factory requirements?
2. Process Control
Can the supplier reproduce an agreed washing, drying, sorting and packing process?
3. Operational Reliability
Can enough garments be returned on time every service cycle?
4. QA and ESD Requirements
Are responsibilities for garment inspection, electrical verification, exceptions and documentation clearly defined?
A supplier qualification should address all four.
Step 1: Define the Garment Before Evaluating the Laundry
Do not begin supplier qualification with the generic description:
“We have ESD coats.”
Collect the actual garment information.
For each garment model, identify where possible:

fabric composition

conductive or dissipative components

care label

Different ESD garments may require different processes.
A supplier should therefore qualify the actual garment, not simply the category “ESD clothing”.
Step 2: Determine Whether the Garment Is ESD, Cleanroom or Both
This distinction should be made early.
ESD Garment
An ESD garment is used as part of an electrostatic-control program.
Its construction may include conductive or static-dissipative materials.
Cleanroom Garment
A cleanroom garment is used where contamination or particle control is part of the production environment.
ESD Cleanroom Garment
Some facilities use garments that must satisfy requirements from both systems.
This distinction matters because:
ESD performance and cleanroom cleanliness are not the same requirement.
A laundry process suitable for an ESD garment does not automatically qualify as a specialized cleanroom decontamination or sterile process.
Likewise, a cleanroom garment process does not automatically prove that the garment continues to meet the electrical requirements of an ESD control program.
If both requirements exist, both must be defined during supplier qualification.

Step 3: Separate Laundering from Electrical Verification
This is one of the most important questions in ESD garment management.
Laundry is not automatically an electrical performance test.
IEC 61340-4-9:2024 provides test methods for evaluating the electrical resistance of garments containing conductive or static-dissipative components used for electrostatic-discharge control.
ANSI/ESD STM2.1 is technically equivalent to IEC 61340-4-9.
If your ESD control program requires periodic verification of garments, define separately:

Do not leave this responsibility ambiguous.

Step 4: Review the Washing Process
Ask the supplier how a process is selected for a new garment.
Good supplier qualification questions include:

“We use the same ESD wash for everything.”

The supplier should be able to explain how the process is connected to the garment specification.
Step 5: Evaluate Detergent and Chemical Restrictions
Cleaning effectiveness is only one consideration.
The factory should also know whether the products and treatments used are compatible with the garment.
Ask:

The objective is to clean the garment while staying within the approved maintenance requirements.
Step 6: Define How Stains and Exceptional Garments Are Handled
Industrial garment loads are rarely identical every week.
Some garments may arrive with:

A supplier qualification should establish what happens to these items.
Possible classifications include:
Standard Garments
Processed according to the normal program.
Stain-Treatment Garments

Damaged Garments
Separated for review rather than automatically returned to use.
Ask the supplier:
How will we know when a garment did not follow the standard workflow?
Exception management should be part of the service specification.
Step 7: Evaluate the Drying Process
Drying should be treated as part of garment processing, not merely the final machine cycle.
There are two requirements that must work together.
Protect the Garment
Drying temperature and conditions must remain compatible with the garment specification.
Return the Garment Fully Dry
A garment should not be packed while meaningful residual moisture remains.
Moisture inside a sealed bag, storage container, locker or garment-distribution system can create operational problems including:

damp garments reaching employees

Step 8: Define Receiving, Counting and Sorting
For a factory using hundreds of garments, sorting can become as important as washing.
Before approving the supplier, define:

how garment types are separated

whether sorting is required by size

whether sorting is required by department

how exceptional garments are identified

how lost or unidentified garments are handled
The correct sorting method depends on the customer's internal garment-distribution system.

The supplier should return garments in a format that reduces additional work at the factory.
Step 9: Review Packing Requirements
Packing should also be defined before routine service begins.
Ask whether the factory requires:

A good laundry process can still create problems if hundreds of clean garments return in a format that the factory cannot efficiently distribute.

Do not qualify a supplier only on the volume handled during the first pilot.

Can the supplier handle our normal weekly quantity repeatedly?
Then ask the more important question:
What happens if our volume increases?

For example, a factory processing 500 garments weekly should not qualify a supplier based only on a successful test involving 20 garments.
A small pilot can prove process compatibility.

Step 11: Examine the Collection and Return Cycle
Recurring industrial laundry is a logistics system.
A typical weekly cycle may look like:
Clean garments returned → used garments collected → processing → sorting and packing → next return
The supplier should understand:

Warning Signs During Supplier Evaluation
Several answers should trigger additional questions.
“All ESD garments use the same process.”
Not necessarily.
Manufacturer and garment requirements should be reviewed.
“If the stain is difficult, we simply use stronger chemicals.”
That may conflict with garment-care requirements.
“The dryer program is automatic, so drying is not an issue.”
The relevant question is whether garments are appropriately dried before packing.
“Electrical testing is included because we wash ESD garments.”
Ask exactly what test is being performed, according to which method, by whom and with what acceptance criteria.
Laundry and electrical verification are separate activities.
“We can handle any quantity.”
Ask for evidence of recurring operational capacity.
“We don't need a pilot.”
For a large or technically sensitive garment program, a pilot can reduce risk for both parties.

A pilot should be small enough to control but large enough to produce useful information.

Why One Successful Pilot Cycle Is Not Always Enough
The first cycle can confirm that a process is technically possible.
A recurring supplier must prove something more:

A better evaluation may include several cycles so the customer can see:
